Susan Graff and her project team partnered with Unilever to develop and brand their Environmental Management System (EMS) in addition to designing, developing and implementing an associated Environmental Awareness Training program for all staff. This was a critical component of the successful implementation of the company’s Environmental Management System and registration under the guidelines of the International Standards Organization (ISO) 14001. Unilever employees were trained on how to participate in the environmental performance of the company and help identify improvement opportunities. The “human factor” of system implementation soon proved its worth, as the engaged employee teams identified air emission, dust and energy reductions that saved $500,000 in 2001 alone. The Environmental Management Team of a Unilever Home and Personal Care plant was also trained to identify and rank key environmental impacts, empowering them to be more engaged in the processes throughout the company. These programs have continued to empower employees to identify cost savings opportunities and mitigate environmental risks.
