RRS Adds New Communications Consultant

December 3, 2015, Ann Arbor, Michigan – Sustainability and recycling consultancy, Resource Recycling Systems (RRS), announced that Marissa Segundo has joined the firm as Communications Consultant. In her role at RRS, Segundo will apply her public sector recycling, media relations, community outreach, and communications planning experience to enrich and support client projects.

Formerly the Recycling Coordinator for the City of Largo, Fla., Segundo led the communications and outreach efforts for the waste reduction and recycling programs. She helped to strategically plan and implement Largo’s city-wide single-stream campaign in 2014, garnering a 60 percent increase in recycling tons and a 92 percent set-out rate.

Largo’s mixed recycling communications campaign earned a 2015 Gold Excellence Award for Awareness Campaigns from the Solid Waste Association of North America (SWANA), as well as several statewide and local communications awards. Segundo received a Best of the Bay – Best Queen of Green award in 2013 for the recycling and waste reduction promotion in Largo and the Tampa Bay area. During her nearly six years as Largo’s Recycling Coordinator, Segundo utilized various communications strategies that helped to divert 44,000 tons of waste and save $2 million in tipping fees.

Segundo also served as the Public Relations Manager for the SPCA Tampa Bay in Florida where she acted as the spokesperson via television, radio and print interviews in English and Spanish. During her tenure, pet adoptions increased by 13% – the largest increase in its 75 year history.

In addition to her public and non-profit sector work, she is the current President for the Public Relations Society of America of Tampa Bay.

Segundo holds two bachelor degrees in Foreign Languages and Public Relations, an Accreditation in Public Relations (APR), and an accreditation in Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Green Associate.

Segundo will operate out of the St. Petersburg, Fla. area.
