RRS Discusses Compostable Foodservice Packaging as Option for Positive Impact on Food Waste Recovery

April 29, 2014, Ann Arbor, Michigan – Sustainability and recycling consulting firm, RRS, proudly announces Jennifer Lao will present at the Washington State Recycling Association’s 34th Annual Conference and Trade Show in Vancouver, Washington, May 4-7.

Food waste is the largest category of materials that enters the landfill. Jennifer Lao, RRS Consultant, will discuss how compostable foodservice packaging can help facilitate, especially in quick-serve restaurants or cafeterias, food waste recovery by eliminating the need for consumers to follow complicated sorting instructions.

“In 2012, of the 36 million tons of food waste generated, only 4.8% was recovered,” states Lao. “There are various diversion solutions available including donations, animal feed, and composting. The key is collaboratively identifying and working to implement the best solution for each situation.”

Lao will address some of the challenges facing compostable foodservice packaging including availability and operational requirements of composting facilities, as well as economics and contamination. Lao will also highlight examples of voluntary, collaborative efforts with the Foodservice Packaging Institute (FPI) that address these barriers and support composting efforts.

Lao will speak during the “Composting Infrastructure and Materials” session on Monday, May 5, 12:45p-2:00p.
