PET Thermoform Report Examines Recycling Pathways

The Foodservice Packaging Institute (FPI), in collaboration with key partners, has unveiled the findings of the PET Thermoform Cost and Material Flow Analysis, a comprehensive study conducted by RRS.

This report offers insights into the estimated material volumes present in the market and the current pathways for recovery. It also explores the costs and trade-offs associated with various strategies to enhance the recovery of PET thermoform packaging—whether through material recovery facilities (MRFs), PET reclaimers, or plastics recycling facilities (PRFs). PET thermoform packaging covers a range of products, including cups, clamshells, trays, bowls, and containers used for deli, bakery, and take-out items.

In partnership with FPI, this project was supported by a diverse group of trade organizations such as the Association of Plastic Recyclers (APR), the National Association for PET Container Resources (NAPCOR), the Northeast Recycling Council, The Recycling Partnership, and the Sustainable Packaging Coalition. Additionally, industry leaders like Amcor, Danone North America, Driscoll’s, Eastman Chemical, Green Impact, Loop Industries, Mondelēz International, and Sonoco contributed to the initiative.
